Light in the darkness

Two days ago I visited the home of Nireekshana, a recent graduate from our Freesia Bloom Digital Skills for Life Center.

She now works six days a week in marketing (putting her newfound digital literacy skills to good use!) so the only day she was free to meet was Sunday.

From her rooftop in Chinnapa Garden - the slum where nearly all of our Freesia Bloom learners live - I spotted a bold and bright Christmas star.

Know that as you read this it is there, foisted high, shining in its corner, as many stars are all over the world right now - at Christmas markets in wealthy cities and in majority world slums. And stars are there in our homes! My kids and I always cherished the moment we perched our lit star at the top of our living Christmas tree!Joyfully knowing that the star is symbolic of the hope we have in dark times.

Cherish this hope and keep a firm hold on it this Christmas and in the New Year.

If I could bottle the joy and gratitude expressed by our learners at their Christmas celebration on Friday, I would surely send it to you! Instead, catch a glimpse of it here - a celebratory “Emmanuel is always with us” dance.

Grateful for you. Merry Christmas!
