Without digital literacy, individuals are unable to participate in modern society, and as a result are at higher risk to experience things like poverty or poor health. Currently, there is a significant global digital divide that leaves too many people in these situations. - Viasat
Today is World Youth Skills Day.
Today we wish to celebrate that currently 96 learners are powering their way through our digital literacy program! 74 learners are at our Freesia & Bluebells Bloom Learning Centres in Bangalore, India.
We're pleased to share that, for the first time, 19 of that number are between the ages of 13 and 16. To-date most of our learners have been ages 16 and above, but by adding an after-school time slot to the Bloom Learning Centre hours, school-age students can be accommodated. For most of them this is the first time they've had hands-on access to a computer; their computer curriculum at school has only been supported with text books. Divya (15), who lives in a one-room home nearby with her sister and her mother, says,
"I feel more prepared for the future because I am learning computer skills. I want to become a business officer."
250 km away, in the heart of the Mudumulai Tiger Reserve, Tamil Nadu, 22 Eighth Standard students at The Good Shepherd School kicked off their new school year by diving into our curriculum!
Joyce Samuel, the school principal, after we equipped a classroom with computers, decided to make our Learning Pathways a part of the students' overall curriculum, saying,
"I strongly believe that this course will empower students to confidently handle computers, overcome any intimidation, and develop essential skills. The typing lessons will teach proper fingering techniques and improve their typing speed. Additionally, learning spoken English and Microsoft programs will equip them with valuable skills that will benefit their future career prospects and employment opportunities."
Your ongoing support is currently skilling nearly 100 learners!
We are now raising funds to help our partner Family Development Services establish two more Blooms in Bangalore, and to renovate a building at The Good Shepherd School in Masingudi to accommodate a larger tech hub, which we will need to equip with IT infrastructure.
Please consider supporting the initiatives with a one-time or recurring donation.
Grateful for you!
